In those days New Line was a very small company and everyone was accessable. I was really interested in the effects and makeup and so forth so I visited the effects guys and spent time on set watching them shoot. SUPERHERO: the Storyboards, I mean, The Movie!

Here, just to get your attention is a pic of Pamela Anderson I took while shooting, down at a hotel in MacArthur Park... the place has been used in a ton of movies.
I have been told this movie is actually funny, although I haven't seen it. In any case here are some storyboards from SUPERHERO... I did meet Leslie Nielsen which was cool. He is in great shape and had a strong voice and handshake. You gotta love Leslie Nielsen, right? I had a lot of fun on this movie.

Dick Briefer's Frankenstein is in, as well as some other new fiends. Over SIXTY monsters have been added since the mural was originally "finished".

Lost Claus

Woprked briefly on this huge overblown corny piece of crap movie, was treated poorly and only last night caught part of it on the teevee. yawwwwwwwn. Replete with especially tedious "moments of shit" (industry term for when they try to get all poignant and profound for a second in the midst of a sea of noisy overblown bullshit- a thing South Park handles really well cause they use them for what they are and poke fun at the convention brilliantly) I was just as glad I didn't get a credit on it. At last I don't think I did- I did not wait to see.

I was working on this Ivan Reitman movie called EVOLUTION which turned out to be pretty much a piece of shit lame Ghostbusters Wannabee and I wondered if I could get into the creature design area... of course Phil Tippett did the monters and what I learned was that all the monster shops pretty much want to do the design themselves- I think it's the funnest part of the process and I understand that- nonetheless it got me going and I whipped these guys up at the time to see if I could do it- I thought maybe somebody somewhere would like these. But I have thought a lot of things. Anyway here is some output from the VONSHOLLYWOOD CREATURE FACTORY.

HEY HEY HEY!

Art departments are funny little communities that spring up during film productions, flourish, evolve and suddenly vanish when they are finished with us. This is from the Fat Albert movie- but the version that didn't get made. Forest Whitaker was to direct, and he was great fun. Evidently he and Bill Cosby had creative differences and it didn't work out. I had to go and see Mister Cosby one day and he baffled me... he sat smiling under a giant picture of himself and asked me "Who is the boss?" I wanted to guess... Bruce Spingsteen? Tony Danza? Was this a trick question... ? His friend and interpreter, a tall black man whose name was Crosby as I reall explained the desired answer was "the Director" and I sagely and promptly agreed. It was a strange experience and I am still not sure what it was about. Bill Cosby told me "everything these days is niggamuthafucker niggamuthafucker" and that was not going to be the case with this movie. Not that I was trying to make that the case, mind you! Then he smiled and said "integrity". I sat there in mid-transition from thinking "WOW! Bill Cosby said niggamuthafucker" and "the man's insane! I've got to get out of here!" It was quite an experience but the whole thing was great and a version of the movie of course did get made... But I don't think any of the people pictured here were involved. Just another fun couple of months in storyboard land.

Model kits based on... well what the post title says. Angry Red Planet being of course a ridiculous science fiction movie where everything was tinted red on Mars to disguise the fact that much of the scenery was merely artwork- but it DID by God have some crazy MONSTERS in it. Which is more than you often got in those days... and a very strange Ed "Big Daddy" Roth monster which somehow got wedged in among his Rat Fink and various Hot Rod monsters but was in fact, and there's no getting around this, a Space Monster, Note the three eyes both creations sport and the TWO MOUTHS on the martian--- whereas our fink has three tongues... An era of rich culture has obviously slipped away, sigh.

Geoge DiCaprio arranged the whole thing with Timothy and Last Gasp, bless his heart. He is Leonardo's dad, natch, and if anyone ever deserved a break of the magnitude young Leo has had, it is George! He is the greatest.

Some killa moments from THE BEAST FROM 20,000 FATHOMS by the one and only Ray Harryhausen, THE BLACK SCORPION from the legendary Willis O'Brien and THE ANIMAL WORLD on which they both worked. Note the empty tabletop with painted backdrop for the triceratops scene the The Animal World... hard to get a shot with no animal in that world. Also note the LIONEL train from the Black Scorpion train attack!

MURAL REVISION In Progress

So I made this giant HISTORY OF MONSTERS mural a while ago and there are around 3oo monsters in it. It was SO much work I kind of rushed the art a little just to get the thing up and running, as it were. I always intended to go over it all and tighten things up quite a bit.

And I mentioned here that they ran it in Fangoria's 30th anniversary issue, very small. Which I am glad about because I really needed to revise the work to be satisfied with it and, printed very small, it looked okay. Lately I have been rewoking and polishing the art, which is very slow because the thing is gigantic, but anyway here's a little section of the revision I'm doing.

CHARLES R. KNIGHT The GrandMaster of Nature Artists In NEW BOOK!

My longtime pal, Richard Milner, is authoring the definitive book on the immortal Charles Knight, perhaps the greatest animal artist of all time. He is being ably assisted by the fantastic Dan Varner, a great artist in the classical tradition in his own right and an authority on Knight! (Look up the "Oceans of Kansas" book and'or website for a selection of Dan's wonderful work.)

The Knight book is a year or so away and will be published by Harry Abrams. More will be revealed here as it develops. I know Richard and Dan have uncovered an astounding trove of unseen art and information and this book will be a true landmark achievement, showcasing Knight's sculpture as well as his paintings.
Meanwhile here is Mister Knight's rendition of an adult male gorilla skull, as yet unpublished (until right now!).

Get together and work honestly for the good of the people. Or at least shut the hell UP for five seconds and let a good president have a chance to undo some of the horrible harm you and your party did to America.

Sen. Max Baucus (D-Mont.), and four other Democrats sided with Republicans in opposing a public-option amendment offered by Sen. John D. Rockefeller IV (D-W.Va.). Baucus said he voted against the politically volatile provision because he feared that a bill including it would not get the 60 votes it would need to pass on the Senate floor. The committee voted 15 to 8 to reject the amendment.

Oh THAT's a good reason to vote "no". Let's vote "no" because we might vote "no" anyway. They make me sick.
